PDA-Aware Tutoring & Support
I understand that traditional approaches to education do not work for every child.
A number of children and young people I have supported have had a PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance, or Persistent Drive for Autonomy) profile. These learners often experience high levels of anxiety around demands, expectations, and perceived loss of control.
As a result, educational experiences that work well for other children may lead to stress, avoidance, or disengagement.
A PDA-Aware approach
I am PDA-aware and recognise that for many learners with a PDA profile, meaningful learning begins with a trusting relationship.
Before academic progress can take place, time is often needed to build rapport, understand individual interests, and create a learning environment where the child feels safe, respected, and in control of their participation.
This means that early sessions may not always look like traditional tutoring. We may spend time talking, sharing interests, playing educational games, exploring topics chosen by the learner, or simply getting to know one another. If I know in advance your child's likes, passions and interests, this can open the door early on.
While this approach may appear less structured, it is often the foundation that allows genuine learning and engagement to develop over time.
Managing Expectations Around Progress
I believe in being open and realistic about outcomes.
Children with a PDA profile can make excellent academic progress, but progress is rarely linear. Some learners may engage quickly, while others require a longer period of relationship building before they are ready to focus on specific academic goals.
For this reason, families should understand that tutoring may initially focus on:
-
Building trust and reducing anxiety
-
Developing confidence in learning situations
-
Creating positive educational experiences
-
Understanding the learner's interests, strengths and challenges
-
Establishing a sustainable working relationship
Academic targets remain important, but they must be balanced with the learner's emotional wellbeing and readiness to engage.
Flexible and Individualised Support
No two children with a PDA profile are the same.
I work collaboratively with families to develop approaches that suit each learner's needs, adapting expectations, communication styles and learning activities as required.
Sessions are guided by curiosity, flexibility and mutual respect rather than rigid demands or compliance-based methods.
Working Together
Parents and carers are often experts in what works best for their child. I value this knowledge and encourage ongoing communication so that support remains responsive and effective.
If you are considering tuition for a child with a PDA profile and would like to discuss whether my approach may be suitable, please get in touch.
I would be happy to talk through your child's individual circumstances and answer any questions you may have.
